1/5/2024 0 Comments Exifrenamer windowsIf Apple would fix the few things that are wrong with the Finder (by adopting what is good about Windows Explorer), then OS X would be nearly perfect. Every month on the 15th, I defrag my hard disk.Every day at 06:00, I restart my computer (Gray).Ĭ:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -r -f -m \\gray.Every day at 05:00, I reindex my intranet search index (via SWISH-E).Every day at 04:00, I run SpySweeper to clean out viruses and spyware. This cannot be setup as a scheduled task. Every day at 03:00, I run MozyPro to backup my “Documents and Settings” directory.Every day at 02:00, I run Registry Mechanic to fix broken registry entries."C:\Program Files\Webroot\Washer\SchdWash.exe" Every day at 01:00, I run Window Washer to delete temporary files. To deal with all of these problems, I run a series of schedules tasks: I have to wrestle daily with deleting temporary files, cleaning registry entries, sweeping for viruses and spyware, defragmenting disks, and dealing with memory leaks. *Windows Explorer does, however, do a good job at lots of things that matter to me: tiling windows (which I do hundreds of times per week), maximizing windows, navigating windows (the lack of a “parent folder” icon in OS X is maddening), finding files.īut Windows Explorer is about the only thing I really like about Windows XP. In September 2007, I purchased 5 boxed copies of Windows XP. In April 2007, Microsoft announced that Windows XP was going to be retired in January 2008. Windows Vista is bloatware, emphasizing form over function. Microsoft should do what Apple did with OS X: rebuild it from scratch on top of a stable UNIX operating system. Running Windows Update only annually also helps keep Windows XP relatively stable. I intend for this to be my last Windows operating system. Note that there are some essential applications (such as QuickBooks) that are not my favorites. I have, however, indicated my *favorite applications in each category by including an asterisk (*) next to the filename. Software that also works in Linux is a plus, but I’ve pretty much given up on Linux on the desktop: too many distros, too few standards, not enough of the software that I need. And I am interested in software that works in both operating systems. I am interested in trends across operating systems. I use both OS X and Windows XP daily, rely on both, and prefer each for some tasks. I do not intend this to be a Macintosh-vs-Windows (or Windows-vs-Macintosh) article, but I will review software from each OS in each category. So this is one area where Windows is superior to OS X. This includes Apple and third-party applications. Some OS X applications object to being moved from their default location and will break if you move them. But because OS X uses the actual applications (not shortcuts), I can only organize some applications into their appropriate folders. Since Windows uses shortcuts (“aliases” in OS X, “links” in Linux) for the Start menu, I can reorganize them to my heart’s content. My Windows “Start” menu and my Mac “Applications” folder look like this: Which maps nicely onto PCs, Macs, and services. I’m also adding a “Google” category to my blog, because it’s clear to me now that the computing world is dominated by three key players: Microsoft, Apple, and Google. So perhaps the rise of services (and the inclusion of “services” as a category) is the real story of 2007. In 2008, I’m switching from Eudora (a PC-based and Mac-based email client) to Google’s Gmail. I used to use a PC-based RSS reader, but now I use Google Reader. Some software applications (like backup via ) include server (or service) components, but that’s not really what I mean by “services.” Others software services require no client-specific software (other than a web browser). But one of my software categories is “Hardware” (where I keep drivers and the like), so the addition of hardware was a logical extension. I originally intended only to include software. This article quickly became longer and more detailed than I had intended. This is my review of the software, hardware, and services that I was using in 2007.

1/5/2024 0 Comments Flatout video game seriesThat's because Metacritic didn't launch until 2001 and only covers games released after that point. You might notice that some of gaming history's most infamous bad games- E.T., Shaq-Fu, Bubsy 3D, etc- are missing from this list. That said, it's easy to pass the buck to publishers or other outside forces when a game goes sour, but there are plenty of times where a developer had all the chances in the world to pull a project together and simply failed to do so, by nobody's fault but their own. When a game reaches the status of being among the worst of all time, there's little ambiguity- generally, the games seem unfinished, lack the basic elements of an enjoyable gameplay experience, and feel as though they were thrown together by developers who had no passion for the project and/or were forced to work on it under rushed, limiting conditions. On a gamer-to-gamer basis, a game might not click for a variety of reasons, some of which are difficult to define. While the internet is fond of reducing all video games- and most media products- to being either awesome or terrible, there are a relatively small percentage of games that have been released throughout history that are truly and objectively bad. Maybe there are some people out there who might have a fondness for these games- the worst-reviewed in the history of Metacritic- but it's hard to imagine that it's out of anything other than being able to laugh at how utterly bad the games are. 1/5/2024 0 Comments Play chess online multiplayerThroughout the game, you have to make sure you protect your king even as you attack your opponent. Capturing your opponent’s king is the game objective. The king, on the other hand, while also capable of moving in any direction, can only take one step at a time. This makes her a very versatile and powerful piece. The queen can mimic the range of movement of any other piece, with the exception of the knight. In the middle of the back row, you’ll find your king and your queen. Next to the knights are the bishops, who can only move diagonally. These pieces are also unique in that they are the only ones that can jump over other pieces. The knight can move in an L shape in any direction. Directly beside your rooks are your knights (these usually look like horses). Your rooks can only move in straight lines (forward, backward or sideways). On the outside corners of the back row are your rooks (these usually look like castle towers). Only on their first turn may pawns take two steps forward. The pawns may only move forward one step at a time, and they can only strike an opposing piece by taking one diagonal step. Each player has eight identical pawns, which make up the front row (or rank) of your starting position. Each player has 16 pieces, and the two sets can usually be told apart by color. To get the Group button back, move the shape, picture, or object to another location on your slide outside of the placeholder text, or remove the placeholder from the things you want to group. But the shapes cannot be grouped with the placeholder text. In the above example, the blue square and the green circle can be grouped together. If you are using PowerPoint, you might have tried to group something with the title placeholder text (“Click to add title”) or with the content placeholder (“Click to add text”). The Group button will not be available if any of these objects is selected. Your selection includes a table, worksheet, or GIF image. For more information on converting them to shapes, see: Convert an SVG image to an Office shape. To group SVG icons together you have to convert them to shapes first. You can't use the Group tool with SVG icons, so those don't count. Make sure you have multiple shapes or pictures selected. You will need to select more than one shape, picture or object in order to. But when you have entire rows or columns selected, you can. You can also group objects using the Layers panel. On Windows, select the objects to be grouped or ungrouped, right-click, and select Group or Ungroup from the context menu. Again, if you only have cells selected, you'll get a dialog, and you'll need to choose wether you want to ungroup rows or columns. On Mac, choose either Object > Group or Object > Ungroup from the main menu, or select Group or Ungroup from the context menu. To ungroup, use the shortcut Alt Shift left arrow in Windows and Command Shift J on a Mac. Here are some reasons why the Group button is grayed out and the things you can do to get it back. Press and hold CTRL while you click the shapes, pictures, or other objects to group. With entire rows or column selected, you can group in one step. 1/4/2024 0 Comments Doomsday covidThere are still many homes and many buildings throughout America that have built-in bomb shelters from the Cold War era, and many people have built remote shelters in more modern times to protect their families from societal threats. The first thing to consider is that doomsday prepping is not a new phenomenon, nor are the concerns over viral outbreaks. And a fresh look at consumer sentiment took a dive with citations about the coronavirus fears. Still, every agency and forecasting outfit around has warned about GDP taking a hit. The public hasn’t had to pay much attention of late because the last rise of the doomsday preppers was during and in the aftermath of the Great Recession. With this in mind, we have looked back at our coverage of doomsday preppers from the past decade and applied some of the thoughts to the current scare. routinely tracks many issues covering the economy and the personal well-being of the average person. The public has every right to be concerned about the coronavirus, and there are some lessons from the not-so-distant past that may prove to be beneficial from a rather unique subset of the population: doomsday preppers.Ģ4/7 Wall St. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that it’s likely “when rather than if” for expectations of an outbreak in the public in the United States. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the number of cases outside of China are now greater than the number of cases in China, and the U.S. The instances of deaths and illnesses are the worst situations to consider, but the underlying “fear and uncertainty” are already spelling trouble for the global economy. With more cases in Italy, Iran and South Korea, there are also newly reported cases in Spain, Greece, Brazil, elsewhere in the Middle East and so on. The outbreak of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus has now expanded well beyond China and has reached much higher numbers than global health watchers would have hoped for. 1/4/2024 0 Comments Recordit button hobby lobby1 small mixing bowl or disposable container.1 large mixing bowl or disposable container.1 cup water 1/2 cup white school glue (Elmers works best). Our secretary is such a doll that she played along and even kissed somebody's /ou/ better! LOVE HER! Throughout the day I sent them to the office because of their /ou/s. Look o-u /ou/ and o-w /ou/." They thought this was pretty funny. Then we responded with "I have two /ou/s. We pretended we were really hurt saying "ou! ou!" and p OUting until someone asked what was wrong. (Okay, so they might have only been hilarious to six year-olds!) I put band-aids on all of them and wrote ou on one side and ow on the other. I wanted to drill in the ou sound so I we played HILARIOUS jokes on everybody at our school today. I had a few who were really trying to read ow as long o this week even though we had gone over the new sound. Just a few weeks ago we had long o spelled ow. It is pretty darn cute! I will have to record it sometime. The kids have to pay attention and do their part on cue. We say "O - U" then crash our hands together and say "/ou/!" We repeat this with "O - W - /ou/!" Each week, I lead the new sound and then on Friday I assign the line to a new student. For the /ou/ sound, we make an o with one hand and a "u" with the other. We use the the sign language alphabet in the movements that go along with the chant. I start with "Oh, we're first graders and we're here to tell you" (they repeat this line) "learning to read is fun to do." (they repeat) "We know so many sounds, we practice everyday" (they repeat) "We sing a little song and this is what we say:" (repeat) then we go into all of the sounds. My husband is in the Marines, and I was inspired by cadences. I made up a little song several years ago that goes with all the sounds we learn in first grade. Each Monday, I introduce the new sound and we add it to our "phonics chant". Our focus sound this week is the ou/ow dipthong. It is my goal to update ALL the old MOVE ITs. Those who purchased from the beginning were happy. They just got better and better as I made more. Looking back on them, my first games seem a bit blah. I can quickly look around and assess where we are. I like to use dry erase boards with MOVE ITs. I am now including that as an option so that it fits each class. Some teachers wanted the answer to show, others did not. Let's face it, sitting is boring! I have been making MOVE IT activities for the past year, and they keep getting better! I started adding music during the exercise breaks. He responded very well to this and the rest of my students LOVED it. After attending several courses organized by IVI Vigo, I discovered that I really liked it, and I applied for the Master's Degree in Biotechnology of Assisted Human Reproduction at the University of Valencia. Assisted reproduction was a subject that we had barely addressed, but it caught my attention as soon as I looked into it. During the last year of my degree, I had not yet decided what I wanted to do given such a wide range of options. It came to me both by chance and intuition. And this is one of embryology's upcoming challenges.” How did you discover reproductive medicine? An understanding of the cytoplasmic maturation process will enable us to develop new approaches that can improve oocyte quality and, therefore, reproductive success. Evaluating oocyte quality in the laboratory is, to a certain extent, subjective. In Cristina's words: "it is still a rather unknown field, in comparison with other branches of embryology. In this interview, the researcher explains that there is still much progress to be made in the improvement and evaluation of oocyte quality. On this occasion, we asked her to explain why she chose the topic of her thesis. As an active investigator, she is involved in both IVF laboratory projects and others related to pre-treatment gynecological work. With her broad area of expertise, Cristina Rodríguez contributes to a multitude of ongoing projects. She is currently completing her PhD on in vitro oocyte maturation and the improvement of oocyte quality, under the tutelage of Dr. Cristina Rodríguez, a researcher at IVI Valencia, left Galicia where she trained as a biologist to further her education in assisted reproduction. |
